The 6-month cliff filters out early exits while being short enough to remain attractive to experienced candidates who have optionality. The 24-month linear tail maintains alignment through the protocol’s most critical development phase.
Advisors
Recommended structure: 6-month cliff, 12-month linear vesting (18 months total).
Advisor allocations are typically smaller and the nature of the engagement is more episodic. A 6-month cliff followed by 12-month linear vesting is appropriate: it ensures advisors are present through the initial launch phase before any tokens unlock, and it completes within a timeframe consistent with a defined advisory engagement.
Longer advisor vesting schedules are occasionally used but carry a practical risk: advisors who are technically vesting but no longer actively contributing represent an allocation that is accruing without corresponding value delivery. Shorter schedules with clearly defined renewal terms are structurally cleaner.
Early Investors

Investor vesting is as important to protocol health as team vesting, and is frequently treated with less rigor. An investor allocation with no vesting schedule is a structural risk: a large wallet with fully liquid tokens has no on-chain mechanism preventing immediate market exit.

A protocol that enforces team vesting but not investor vesting has addressed half the alignment problem.
The Transferability Property
One vesting property that receives insufficient attention is transferability of vesting control — the ability to reassign an active vesting schedule to a new wallet address without interrupting the schedule or forfeiting accrued tokens.
This property matters for operational continuity. The scenarios where it becomes relevant are predictable:
- A core contributor rotates their operational wallet for security reasons.
- A team member leaves under neutral terms and the protocol agrees to honor their accrued allocation.
- A contributor’s wallet is compromised and the vesting schedule needs to be reassigned to a new address.
Without transferability, any of these scenarios requires either forfeiture of the allocation or a new vesting deployment — both of which create operational friction and potential disputes.
An on-chain vesting contract with transferable ownership allows the controlling address to be updated while the schedule continues to execute unchanged. The cliff dates, the linear parameters, and the total allocation remain constant. Only the wallet authorized to claim the unlocked tokens changes.
This is a structural feature, not a cosmetic one. For protocols with multiple contributors on active vesting schedules, the absence of transferability introduces a class of operational risks that are entirely preventable.
What On-Chain Enforcement Changes
The difference between a vesting agreement documented in a legal contract and a vesting schedule enforced by an immutable smart contract is not a technicality. It is the difference between a commitment that depends on human compliance and a commitment that depends on deterministic code execution.
A vesting schedule in a legal document can be renegotiated, contested, or simply ignored if the counterparty has already departed the jurisdiction or dissolved the entity. This matters most in adversarial scenarios — precisely the scenarios where enforcement is needed. A cliff enforced by code does not require a legal action to uphold. It requires nothing. The contract runs. The cliff date passes or does not. The tokens unlock or do not.
For investors evaluating a protocol, the distinction between “we have vesting agreements” and “vesting is enforced on-chain in an immutable contract” is the distinction between a promise and a guarantee. They are not equivalent.
Choosing the Right Configuration
The decision between linear-only, cliff-only, and combined cliff-plus-linear is not a question of preference. It is a function of what the vesting schedule is designed to enforce.
If the objective is retention over an extended period with an initial commitment gate, the combined structure is appropriate. This covers the majority of team, advisor, and investor allocations.
If the objective is ongoing compensation for active contributors with no minimum commitment threshold, linear-only is appropriate. This covers grant programs, retroactive compensation, and short-duration service agreements.
If the objective is milestone-based release at a defined date, cliff-only is appropriate, though this use case is relatively narrow and should be evaluated carefully for its release-event implications.
The parameters within each structure — cliff duration, vesting duration, total allocation — should be calibrated to the stakeholder’s role, the protocol’s development timeline, and the expectations of the investor base.
What should not be variable is the enforcement mechanism. The schedule, once deployed, should be immutable. The cliff date should be readable on-chain. The unlock parameters should be verifiable by anyone without contacting the team.
A vesting schedule that can be modified after deployment is not a vesting schedule. It is a statement of current intent, subject to revision.
