How to Not Be Part of the 95%: A Launch Checklist for Serious Developers

Approximately 95% of new liquidity pools launched on PancakeSwap end in rug pulls.

That number deserves a pause. Not because it is shocking — anyone who has operated in DeFi long enough has developed an intuition for it — but because of what it means structurally for any legitimate project launching today.

If you are a developer deploying a new token and pool in 2026, your default credibility with informed investors is near zero. Not because of anything you have done. Because of the statistical environment you are entering. Five percent of new launches are not rugs. The other 95% are. An investor with no information about your project has rational grounds to assume the worst.

This is the problem that launch-day infrastructure solves. Not marketing. Not a whitepaper. Not a Telegram community. The question serious investors are asking is whether your project is structurally capable of rugging them — and the only answer they will trust is one enforced by code, not by your word.

What follows is a practical checklist for developers who intend to be part of the 5%.


Step 1: Lock Your Liquidity On-Chain Before You Announce Anything

The single most verifiable signal a developer can send at launch is a publicly queryable liquidity lock.

When you add liquidity to PancakeSwap, you receive LP tokens representing your share of the pool. If those LP tokens remain in your wallet, you can withdraw the underlying liquidity at any time — draining the pool and leaving token holders with worthless supply. This is the mechanical definition of a rug pull. It requires no exploit, no hack, and no technical sophistication.

Locking those LP tokens in an immutable contract removes the option entirely. The tokens are transferred to a contract governed by a release date encoded at deposit. Until that date, no wallet — including yours — can access them. The liquidity cannot be withdrawn because the mechanism for withdrawing it no longer exists in your control.

The lock should be in place before your launch announcement. Not after. Not “soon.” The sequence matters: if liquidity is lockable after public attention arrives, it was also removable during the window before it was locked. Investors who understand this will notice the timestamp.

Practical parameters for a credible lock:

  • Minimum duration of 12 months for a launch-stage project. Shorter durations signal an intention to revisit the decision.
  • Lock the full LP position, not a partial allocation.
  • Use a flat-fee, zero-admin-key protocol. A locker that takes a percentage of your supply, or one whose team holds upgrade keys, is a smaller version of the same trust problem you are trying to solve.

Step 2: Publish the Lock ID Publicly and Immediately

A lock that exists but is not findable provides limited credibility signal. Publish the lock ID in every channel where your project is discussed: your website, your announcement post, your Telegram pinned message.

Better still: embed real-time verification directly on your landing page. An iframe widget that pulls live lock status from the contract — duration remaining, locked amount, release date — means an investor can verify your liquidity position without leaving your site, without trusting a screenshot, and without asking you to confirm it manually.

The distinction between “we have locked our liquidity” (a social claim) and a live on-chain widget showing the lock status (a verifiable state) is precisely the distinction between the 95% and the 5%. Rug operators can make the social claim. They cannot fabricate the on-chain state.


Step 3: Structure Your Team Allocation as a Vesting Schedule, Not a Lump Sum

Liquidity is not the only vector. A project can lock LP tokens while team wallets hold the full token supply unlocked — executing a slower exit through coordinated sells rather than a single liquidity drain.

Sophisticated investors will check your team wallet allocations. If a significant percentage of supply is held by a small number of wallets with no on-chain constraints on when it can be sold, that is a structural rug risk regardless of your LP lock status.

The credible alternative is a publicly verifiable vesting schedule: team and advisor allocations locked in a linear vesting contract with an optional cliff period. A 6-month cliff followed by 18-month linear vesting, for example, means team members cannot access tokens for 6 months, then receive them gradually over the following 18. The schedule is enforced by the contract, not by internal policy.

Like the LP lock, this should be deployed and published before launch. The lock ID for each team allocation should be publicly accessible. Investors should be able to verify that the team’s financial incentive structure is aligned with long-term project health — because the contract makes misalignment structurally impossible, not because you said it is.


Step 4: Document What You Have Done, Not What You Intend to Do

A roadmap is a statement of intent. A lock ID is a statement of fact. The documentation on your launch page should prioritize verifiable facts over forward-looking claims.

The checklist an investor will run on a credible project looks like this:

  • LP lock: verifiable on-chain, duration visible, admin-key-free protocol confirmed
  • Team vesting: lock IDs published for each allocation, cliff and linear schedule verifiable
  • Contract: source code verified on the relevant block explorer
  • Ownership: renounced or transferred to a time-locked governance contract if applicable

Each item on this list is binary and verifiable. Either it is true and provable, or it is not. Documentation that leads with these items — before tokenomics charts and partnership announcements — signals that the team understands what investors need to assess risk accurately.


Step 5: Operate as if Your Actions Are Public, Because They Are

Every wallet interaction is on-chain. Every LP token movement, every team wallet transfer, every contract call is permanently recorded and publicly queryable. The investors most likely to commit meaningful capital to your project are those capable of reading this data.

This is an asymmetric advantage for legitimate developers. Rug operators cannot fake a clean on-chain history without the cost of actually maintaining one — which defeats the purpose of the exit. A developer who has locked liquidity, deployed verifiable vesting schedules, and operated transparently from day one has a provable record that no amount of marketing can replicate and no social engineering can fabricate.

The 95% statistic is not a condemnation of the ecosystem. It is a description of a market with extremely low barriers to deception and extremely high costs of verification through social channels alone. The developers who solve the verification problem with on-chain infrastructure are not just better positioned to attract capital. They are operating in a category that most investors have statistically learned not to trust — and they are the exception the data still allows for.


Launch Checklist Summary

Before your public announcement:

  • LP tokens locked in an immutable, flat-fee, zero-admin-key contract for a minimum of 12 months
  • Lock ID published and embedded as a live verification widget on the project landing page
  • Team and advisor allocations deployed as verifiable vesting schedules with cliff periods
  • Vesting lock IDs published alongside LP lock ID
  • Contract source code verified on block explorer
  • All of the above timestamped before, not after, the launch announcement

The 95% do not do this. That is, specifically, why doing it matters.
