How to Set Up Cliff Vesting for Your DAO Contributors

In decentralized organizations (DAOs), alignment between contributors and the protocol’s long-term health is critical. Distributing tokens immediately upon a grant allocation can create misalignment, while manual monthly transfers introduce operational overhead and centralization risk.

The standard solution for establishing this alignment is Cliff Vesting.

0xKeep provides a deterministic, immutable infrastructure to automate this process. By utilizing the V11 Enterprise Smart Contract, DAOs can deploy vesting schedules that are mathematically enforced, removing the need for a treasurer to manually disburse funds.

This guide outlines the technical implementation of Cliff Vesting using the 0xKeep interface.

The Mechanics of a Cliff

Before deploying, it is essential to understand the logic governing the asset release. 0xKeep utilizes a Linear Vesting with Cliff model.

  • Total Allocation: The full amount of tokens dedicated to the contributor.

  • Cliff Period: A designated waiting phase (e.g., 6 months). During this time, 0 tokens are releasable.

  • Vesting Duration: The period following the cliff during which tokens stream linearly.

Example Scenario:
A developer is granted 10,000 tokens with a 6-month cliff and a 1-year vesting period.

  • Months 0–6: 0 tokens accessible.

  • Month 6 (Cliff ends): Vesting begins second-by-second.

  • Month 18: 100% of tokens are accessible.

Step 1: Protocol Initialization

Navigate to the 0xKeep dashboard and connect the DAO’s treasury wallet (or the specific payer wallet). Ensure you are connected to the correct network (Base, Arbitrum, or Optimism). Verify the Network Pill in the top right of the dashboard card confirms your target chain.

Select the Linear Vesting tab.

Step 2: Configure Parameters

Input the Token Address of the DAO’s governance or payment token. The interface will automatically fetch the decimals and ticker symbol from the blockchain.

Enter the Amount to Lock. This is the total sum that will be custodied by the smart contract.

Defining the Schedule:

  1. Vesting Duration: Enter the time (in days) over which the tokens will be released after the cliff expires.

  2. Cliff Period (Optional): Enter the number of days the funds must remain fully dormant.

Note: The 0xKeep protocol enforces a maximum cliff duration of 10 years to prevent overflow errors.

Step 3: Execution (Two-Step Authorization)

To ensure transaction safety, 0xKeep requires two distinct on-chain interactions:

  1. Authorize Token: This grants the smart contract permission to interact with the specific amount of tokens defined. It acts as an allowance approval.

  2. Initialize Vesting: This executes the transfer of assets from the wallet to the immutable vault.

The cost for generating a vesting schedule is a flat 0.02 ETH. This fee is passed through directly to the protocol treasury; 0xKeep does not take a percentage of the DAO’s token supply.

Step 4: Verification and Handoff

Once the transaction is confirmed, the protocol generates a Vesting Certificate. This certificate contains a unique ID (e.g., #0xK-B-402) and displays the real-time progress of the schedule.

Key Features for Contributors:

  • Claiming: The contributor (beneficiary) can claim available tokens at any time via the certificate page. They do not need to wait for full maturity.

  • Transferability: If a contributor rotates their wallet or security setup, the ownership of the vesting schedule can be transferred to a new address. This transfers the right to claim future tokens without altering the underlying vesting logic.

  • Verifiable Trust: The “Verified by 0xKeep” badge links directly to the block explorer, allowing the contributor to audit the contract holding their funds.

Summary

By utilizing 0xKeep for contributor vesting, DAOs replace human trust with code. The schedule is immutable; neither the DAO nor the 0xKeep protocol can alter the distribution once initialized. This provides the highest level of assurance for contributors while protecting the DAO’s treasury from immediate liquidation.

0xKeep operates on an immutable, zero-admin-key architecture. No wallet — including those controlled by the 0xKeep team — can pause, modify, or interact with deployed contracts. Time is the only admin.
