The Hidden Cost of Percentage-Based Lockers at Every Supply Size

Liquidity lockers serve a critical function in DeFi: they provide cryptographic proof to investors that a project’s liquidity pool tokens or treasury allocations cannot be silently removed. Without this mechanism, a developer can drain the pool at will — an event colloquially known as a “rug pull.”

The mechanism itself is sound. The business model deployed by most competitors, however, is not.

A significant portion of the liquidity locker market operates on a percentage-of-supply fee model. On the surface, this appears modest. One to two percent sounds like a rounding error. The arithmetic, however, is not modest. It is compounding, extractive, and scales directly against the project’s success.

This article presents the mathematical case for why flat-fee, immutable infrastructure is the only rational choice — at any supply size.


Defining the Fee Structures

For clarity, we define the two models under analysis:

  • Percentage-Based Model: The locker charges a percentage of the total token supply deposited. Industry standard rates range from 0.5% to 2%. For this analysis, we use 1% as a representative benchmark.

  • Flat-Fee Model (0xKeep): The locker charges a fixed fee denominated in ETH. 0xKeep charges 0.03 ETH for a Standard Liquidity Lock and 0.02 ETH for a Linear Vesting contract. For this analysis, we use 0.03 ETH at a $3,000 ETH valuation, equivalent to $90 USD.

The distinction is not semantic. It is structural.


The Comparative Cost Table

The following table models the real-dollar cost of each fee structure across eight representative supply valuations. The 0xKeep flat fee remains constant. The percentage-based fee scales linearly with the project’s total value locked.

The Inflection Point: Where Percentage Fees Become Irrational

At a supply valuation of $10,000, the percentage fee ($100) and the 0xKeep flat fee ($90) are nearly equivalent. This is the only moment in the lifecycle of a project where the two models are comparable.

Every dollar of protocol growth beyond this threshold penalizes the developer who chose percentage-based pricing. At $100,000 in supply value, the cost differential is $910. At $1,000,000, it is $9,910. At $10,000,000, the developer has effectively donated $99,910 to their locker provider.

This is not a fee. It is a tax on success.

Consider what $99,910 represents for a protocol in its early stages: runway, audits, contributor compensation, liquidity incentives. These resources are consumed not by the protocol’s operations, but by the administrative overhead of proving trustworthiness to investors — a proof that should cost the same regardless of scale.


The Admin Key Problem: The Second Hidden Cost

The percentage fee is the visible cost. There is an invisible one that percentage-based lockers rarely disclose in their marketing materials: the presence of admin keys.

Many liquidity lockers — including those charging a percentage — retain administrative access to their contracts. This access enables upgrade functions, pause mechanisms, and in some cases, emergency withdrawal capabilities. The justification is typically framed as a safety feature.

In practice, admin keys represent a single point of compromise. If the locker operator’s private key is compromised, every lock on the platform is at risk. The smart contract, no matter how well-audited, becomes irrelevant. The security guarantee provided to investors is conditional — contingent on the continued integrity of an operator the investor has never vetted.

0xKeep’s V11 contract architecture is immutable. There are no admin keys. There are no upgrade paths. There are no pause functions. Once deployed, the protocol operates on the logic written into the bytecode — permanently, deterministically, and without the possibility of external interference.

This is not a limitation. It is the specification.

Pass-Through Architecture: Eliminating Treasury Risk

A secondary vulnerability present in many percentage-based lockers is the accumulation of ETH or other assets within the contract itself. Fee collection creates a treasury. A treasury creates an attack surface.

0xKeep’s architecture is designed to hold zero ETH. All fees are passed through to a designated recipient address at the moment of transaction. At no point does the contract accumulate a balance that could become the target of a reentrancy attack, a governance exploit, or a direct theft.

The economic surface area of the protocol is minimized by design, not by convention.


Protocol Recommendation

The data above is not a persuasive argument. It is arithmetic. The decision framework for any project evaluating a liquidity locker should be reduced to three questions:

  1. Does the fee scale with my supply value, creating an unbounded cost as the protocol grows?
  2. Does the contract retain admin keys that introduce a centralized failure mode?
  3. Does the contract accumulate a treasury that represents an attack surface?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, the locker’s security guarantee is incomplete and its fee structure is economically hostile to the protocol’s long-term interests.
